Boat Captains! And those who would like to become one!

Boat Captains! And those who would like to become one!

If you've been a Boat Captain in the past or would like to become one for the first time, please let us know. We can always use more Boat Captains -- if we have too many, we can pair up first-timers with more experienced sailors. We are looking for help especially with the Albacore fleet.

You don't need to be an expert - you just need to be interested. Being a Boat Captain is a great way to learn how to take care of a boat - from basic fiberglass repair, to rigging and tuning.

Contact anyone on the Executive to join the team.

Sun-Up!

Sun-Up!

Thank you to everyone who came down to the club in Saturday's gloomy weather - and especially to some of our brand new members, who were ready to be put to work!

We made a solid start on the season despite the chill. Our large winter visitors (keel boats) have left for the summer, all the Albacores and Lasers are on their dollies, and only a few remain to be rigged. The cats are going together, but we're waiting for some shrouds and shroud anchors to make sure they're ready for the season.

However, work remains to be done before lessons and racing starts! Boat Captains need to finish rigging their boats - and boats which have been rigged should be sailed before lessons begin. Boat Captains should also check their Every Day sails.

With our boats ready, we also need to get the property set-up and spiffy. Picnic tables need to be set out on the lawn, garbage collected, and other season opening tasks remain to be completed - just see the front of the members' fridge to find out what needs to be done.

We're hosting an Open House on Saturday and Sunday, April 28 and 29 -- come down to meet prospective members, and help get the club ready for another great season.

Learn to Sail at Westwood!

Learn to Sail at Westwood!

Welcome to Sailing Season!

Everyone tells us they've had a great time after sailing with us. But they also say how surprised they are that sailing starts in the Spring. By the time most people think about learning to sail, our classes are full and we've started to teach more Torontonians how to sail - just like we've been doing for the past 45 years!.

An update on our activities: Westwood put its docks in the water on April 7. We're rigging our boats and hosting an Open House on April 21. Our website has our full calendar -- and our May beginner's course is already Sold Out. But don't despair - we have two beginner's courses in June and another in July. They have a couple of great advantages: the weather is much nicer, and the water much warmer.

Westwood is more than just sailing lessons. We have our weekly social sail and dinners, racing, and recreational sailing. We also have parties, including the season opening Wild in the Jungle Club Crawl, our traditional Westwood Regatta and Rib Dinner, and our Annual Pigroast. The Club is a great place to escape from the city's heat, humidity, dust and noise. Complete with barbeques and members' fridges, it's your waterfront cottage -- without the long drive.

If you still haven't clicked on the link to go to the website to sign up, here's the best part: there is still time to catch our Early Bird Special -- join before the end of April, and you'll save $50.00.

We're looking forward to seeing you again - and bring your friends!

Location: Wellers Bay, near Consecon, in Prince Edward County

Wellers Bay on the West side of Prince Edward County is surrounded by history. Separated from Lake Ontario by the Bald Head Peninsula, this 12-kilometre sand spit is similar to Sandbanks Provincial Park with its dunes, sandy beaches, marram grass, poplars, wormwood and star-flowered Solomon’s seal. In the 1940s, the Department of National Defence used the Bald Head area as a bombing range. Much of this stretch of sand is now the Wellers Bay National Wildlife Area.

AGM2 / Christmas Party Follow-Up

AGM2 / Christmas Party Follow-Up

Thank you to the 27+ or so people who showed up for AGM - Part 2. We maintained quorum through each of the votes despite what was a pretty long - and perhaps even tedious at times - session.

Here a few highlights for you while formal minutes are being prepared:

1. Westwood will be enhancing its safety rules aimed at those sailors (of all classes) who like to venture out of the Outer Harbour in higher winds. Watch for more detailed information, and read the new safety rules plaque in the clubhouse (which will be next to the sign-out board).

2. There will be two amendments to the By-laws. The first essentially provides for a two-year limit on the term of office for the Commodore, and the second requires that the executive set aside money for future purchases whenever it does not purchase an Albacore. While this probably does not go far enough towards ensuring sufficient funding for the perpetual replacement of all classes of boats, I think it is a step in the right direction.

3. We will be working towards getting another Ovington Albacore - this will depend largely on working together with the other clubs to arrange an 8-boat container shipment. More to follow.

Thanks to Kass and Sarah for putting together the Christmas Party and a new twist on the gift exchange. Good times had by all - and with my new "Boat Whisperer" DVD, I should be a force to be reckoned with next season (at least, on the downwind legs ...).

Also, thanks to those who stayed late and left the clubhouse looking pristine.

Year-End Awards

Year-End Awards

A small but enthusiastic group was at the Toronto Hydroplane & Sailing Club for the Commodore's Ball on Saturday night - and some stayed well into the morning. More than just a party, this annual dinner is an opportunity to reflect on the past season and to acknowledge the efforts of all members/volunteers by highlighting the achievements of a few. Each year, Westwood recognizes:

  • Al Ostachoff Mariner of the Year – someone unselfishly dedicated to the sailing community in general; demonstrates initiative and leadership to make things happen and build a strong sailing community
  • Spirit of Westwood – demonstrates a positive and enthusiastic spirit; a member who supports a variety of club activities; takes initiative to do what needs doing
  • Skipper of the Year – a skipper who participates in a range of club activities, and is particularly helpful with White Sail classes and taking new members out sailing new members
  • New Member of the Year – someone who despite being new to club is enthusiastic and participates in a wide range of club activities (e.g. sailing, racing, social, boat and property maintenance), and generally helps out when needed
  • Racing Skipper of the Year - by participation and results (five best Fridays, three best Harbour Masters, two best regattas (one must be Westwood))
  • Racing Crew of the Year - by participation and results (as above)

This year, Westwood honours:

  • Al Ostachoff Mariner of the Year- Mary Free
  • Spirit of Westwood - Julie Postil and Fred Koke
  • Skipper of the Year - Stavros Stavropolous
  • New Member of the Year - Josianne Ruffa and Val Jamouille
  • Racing Skipper of the Year - Kevin Smith
  • Racing Crew of the Year - Kerry Munro

Congratulations to all!

Commodore's Ball - November 12

Commodore's Ball - November 12

As announced at AGM Part 1, the Commodore's Ball is coming!

Toronto Hydroplane & Sailing Club has graciously provided their clubhouse once again. There will be dinner and a DJ, and you are encouraged to "be nauti" -- nautical dress is preferred :)

This year, attendance is limited to 60 (roughly the same as last year). This will allow us to ensure we have enough food. So, buy your ticket in advance. You can do this by paying any member of the executive (e.g., at Docks-Out on Saturday), or by purchasing your ticket online via our PayPal link. Advance tickets will be available only until the limit has been reached or we hit the cut-off date established by the caterer (to be determined, but likely next Wednesday or Thursday).

Tickets: $40 per person in advance. ($50 at the door, subject to availability)

US Nationals

US Nationals

While most of us have packed up our gear for the season, a few intrepid souls are still sailing. Of course, they were sailing in the US Nationals, where it may have been a bit warmer. Then again, there were only three races - either there was no wind, or the weather was horrific.

In any case, Mike Weber crewed for J-Town's Pasquale Leone to a 2nd Place finish, while Milutin Adjacic and Helen Haresign sailed to fifth.

SUN DOWN & AGM -- NEW DATES

SUN DOWN & AGM -- NEW DATES

NEW DATES (when the weather is expected to be more co-operative):

Sun Down will be on Saturday, October 22. While this is a key date for Boat Captains - who have to take apart boats and prepare them for winter storage - there will be plenty to do around the property for everyone. Please drop down to help! 1000hrs would be great, but there'll be people there earlier.

Our Annual General Meeting is held in two parts. Part I addresses summary reports on the current year and election of your Executive Board for the next season. Part II addresses the formal financial report and general business. Part I will be held in conjunction with Sun Down on Saturday, October 22. The meeting will begin at 1400hrs. The date and time for Part II will be announced once we know when our financial reports will be ready (year-end is September 30, and reports are prepared by an accounting firm).
