8173 has arrived!

8173 has arrived!

The boat stork came this morning in the form of a 40' container carrying octuplets. Delivery was completed by 9AM. One of these babies is 8173, Westwood's newest Albacore.

The hull is by Ovington (same as 8162 & 8163) but the fitting out was completed by Rondar. The general impression is that this year's batch of boats is even nicer than last year's. In particular, it appears heavier-duty hardware was used.

Boat Captain Mary Free has already started the final assembly work.

NEW ALBACORE - CONTAINER DELIVERY & UNLOADING -- 0730, WED., JULY 11

The long-awaited day is here! The container has made it way from the UK to Toronto. It will arrive at OHSF at 0700-0730 this Wednesday.

There are eight boats to be unloaded. Our goal is to unload them immediately.

As you now, many hands make light work. If you can help, email us to let us know you'll be there -- commodore [at] westwoodsailing [dot] ca & fleet [at] westwoodsailing [dot] ca

Westwood Regatta and Rib Fest – Saturday July 28

The Westwood Regatta is big event of the year and we need all hands on deck.
First – We want a good showing of Westwood boats. Skippers should start picking out their crew.
Second – It's Rib Fest. If you aren't racing, then you are expected to be eating and dancing.
Third – We need lots of volunteers to help out.
More details and registration information will be coming soon.

We need volunteers for the Westwood Regatta. We need the following:

  1. Registration - 4 people.(to sign up people and take money)
  2. Breakfast - 2 people (to help set up and serve breakfast)
  3. Crash / Committee Boat - 4 people (to go out during the race and work on the boats)
  4. Dinner Prep - 6 people (decorations and ambiance)
  5. Dinner Cooks - 5 people (to make a bring a salad)

There will be a volunteer sign up sheet at the club house or reply to this email.

Social Members - Limit on "Sails"

Social Members - Limit on "Sails"

Social members are reminded that you have a limit of four "sails" per year (one more than in the past).

If you've already hit your limit, you should see Terry to upgrade to a Full membership. There's too much summer left to be sitting on the dock!

For those who have been asking: YES! We are sailing tonight.

The wind is a little higher than we'd normally prefer for this event, but we're hopeful that it will be somewhat sheltered on the Outer Harbour. We also have a smaller group than last time, which should mean more one-on-one boats. This is clearly an advantage on a windy night.

Looking forward to seeing our experienced sailors and to welcoming our guests!

Race: Week of June 25th (Volunteers Needed!)

Race: Week of June 25th (Volunteers Needed!)

First, congrats to the reunited power team of Milutin and Maxim for a 6th in last Friday's race despite some shifty north winds and a terrible start (I actually seen them behind me at one point!).

Friday 29th June. This Friday's race is will be hosted by us; so we'll need some volunteers to help out on the committee boat and mark boat. Race experience is an asset but not required. Email me at race [at] westwoodsailing [dot] ca

Monday 2nd July. The annual Canada day "hangover" harbour master is next week. So find yourself a crew/helm (and some advil) and be at the club for a 1pm gun. Note: Hosted by the Toronto Island Sailing Club so will be in the inner harbour.

Saturday 7th July. Regatta season starts with the OHCC regatta. I don't have any other details yet but keep checking the Canadian Albacore Association website for a notice of race. I'll be sure to post more info when I get it.

Happy Racing!

Race: Week of June 19th

Race: Week of June 19th

The weather is heating up and so is the racing schedule so there's a few things to note for this upcoming week;

First of all congrats to Marty and Danny for their 4th place finish in the Friday series (June 8th). We've been getting a lot of participation so far this year in the Friday series, so great work by all! For more results check the Canadian Albacore Association wesite.

Tuesday skills started last week and 10 souls braved the strong north winds for some great sailing (and some swimming). We're going to keep it going for tonight with a focus on crewing. Mercifully tonight's winds are forecast to be from the west.

The Friday night series continues this week. Please keep in mind this weeks race is in the inner harbour (hosted by TISC). This means that check in time is 5:45pm. This means all helms and crew must be at the club (or called in) by 5:45pm.

The regatta schedule is also ramping up; we've got the LSSA (Lake Sailing Skiff Association) regatta hosted by Mississauga Sailing Club on Saturday and Sunday and the Nepean One Design hosted by Nepean Sailing Club (in Ottawa) also Saturday and Sunday.

As always check the Westwood calendar for more information or send me an email at race [at] westwoodsailing [dot] ca.

Bill

P.S. check in time for this Friday is 5:45pm. Please be on time!

OHCC Youth Camp has asked for our help

OHCC Youth Camp has asked for our help

OHCC has asked for help taking kids sailing and running crash boat surveillance this Sunday. Sounds like all you have to do is show up ready to sail.

Their "Cadet Sailing Orientation" is Father's Day, June 17th.

Parents who know nothing about sailing and children who want to come to camp are checking out OHCC's Youth Sailing Program. They need help to introduce them to the sport and get them excited about sailing.

Sunday, June 17th, they will have 70 parents and children from Navy League and Sea Cadet corps attending a sailing camp orientation day.

Schedule:
Starts at 10am
Boats in the water around 11am
LUNCH will be served
A short sail after lunch
Done by 3pm or so :)

The children will thank you!

Note: Please contact Alan Hall at OHCC to confirm and/or to ask questions.
