Race: Week of June 25th (Volunteers Needed!)

Race: Week of June 25th (Volunteers Needed!)

First, congrats to the reunited power team of Milutin and Maxim for a 6th in last Friday's race despite some shifty north winds and a terrible start (I actually seen them behind me at one point!).

Friday 29th June. This Friday's race is will be hosted by us; so we'll need some volunteers to help out on the committee boat and mark boat. Race experience is an asset but not required. Email me at race [at] westwoodsailing [dot] ca

Monday 2nd July. The annual Canada day "hangover" harbour master is next week. So find yourself a crew/helm (and some advil) and be at the club for a 1pm gun. Note: Hosted by the Toronto Island Sailing Club so will be in the inner harbour.

Saturday 7th July. Regatta season starts with the OHCC regatta. I don't have any other details yet but keep checking the Canadian Albacore Association website for a notice of race. I'll be sure to post more info when I get it.

Happy Racing!

Race: Week of June 19th

Race: Week of June 19th

The weather is heating up and so is the racing schedule so there's a few things to note for this upcoming week;

First of all congrats to Marty and Danny for their 4th place finish in the Friday series (June 8th). We've been getting a lot of participation so far this year in the Friday series, so great work by all! For more results check the Canadian Albacore Association wesite.

Tuesday skills started last week and 10 souls braved the strong north winds for some great sailing (and some swimming). We're going to keep it going for tonight with a focus on crewing. Mercifully tonight's winds are forecast to be from the west.

The Friday night series continues this week. Please keep in mind this weeks race is in the inner harbour (hosted by TISC). This means that check in time is 5:45pm. This means all helms and crew must be at the club (or called in) by 5:45pm.

The regatta schedule is also ramping up; we've got the LSSA (Lake Sailing Skiff Association) regatta hosted by Mississauga Sailing Club on Saturday and Sunday and the Nepean One Design hosted by Nepean Sailing Club (in Ottawa) also Saturday and Sunday.

As always check the Westwood calendar for more information or send me an email at race [at] westwoodsailing [dot] ca.

Bill

P.S. check in time for this Friday is 5:45pm. Please be on time!

OHCC Youth Camp has asked for our help

OHCC Youth Camp has asked for our help

OHCC has asked for help taking kids sailing and running crash boat surveillance this Sunday. Sounds like all you have to do is show up ready to sail.

Their "Cadet Sailing Orientation" is Father's Day, June 17th.

Parents who know nothing about sailing and children who want to come to camp are checking out OHCC's Youth Sailing Program. They need help to introduce them to the sport and get them excited about sailing.

Sunday, June 17th, they will have 70 parents and children from Navy League and Sea Cadet corps attending a sailing camp orientation day.

Schedule:
Starts at 10am
Boats in the water around 11am
LUNCH will be served
A short sail after lunch
Done by 3pm or so :)

The children will thank you!

Note: Please contact Alan Hall at OHCC to confirm and/or to ask questions.

Wednesday Catamaran Racing

Wednesday Catamaran Racing

TMCC invites all comers to our Wed. night racing.

After discussion last fall with some of our neighbours, it was noted that they would be interested in joining us if we had a formal start sequence historically we don't on Wed. evenings.)

I will provide a start every Wed.

I will start with the race tonight (for my own practice) - start seq. at 1825!

Skills Improvement Training - starts Tuesday June 12

Skills Improvement Training - starts Tuesday June 12

This Tuesday (June 12) Westwood will be hosting our first Skills Improvement Training of the season. It's a chance to practice racing skills but even if you don't consider yourself a racer, it's a great chance to get some extra coaching and practice time. Bronze and White Sails are encouraged to come. You can sail Albacores or Lasers. And we'll help people partner up.

Please arrive at 6 and be rigged and on the water by 630.

Mary Free will be hosting the first session. If you are available to help in the crash boat to set marks and do other tasks, please contact Mary or email communications [at] westwoodsailing [dot] ca or just show up a the club early on Tuesday.

UPDATE -- Old Salts' Night with CANSail2 Students

UPDATE -- Old Salts' Night with CANSail2 Students

Unfortunately, thunderstorms put a damper on the Monday-Wednesday CANSail2 old Salts' night. Many thanks to those who came and waited for the storm to pass.

Old Salts will be needed for this class on Monday, June 9 (and also for the morning portion of the weekend class on Sunday, June 8). Food & refreshments will be served!

Thank you!

Thank you!

Special thanks to George for his diligence and initiative in addressing the problems with the dock, and to Julie for her solo effort re-labelling all the Laser spars and the Laser lockers. These are the kinds of tasks that usually go unseen but make life better for everyone. Kudos!

And big thanks to the May White Sail class for cooking a great meal for Thursdays Social Sail. We have a great bunch of new members and some keen laser sailors.

And another big thanks to the awesome Sheena for volunteering to help out with Clubhouse duties.

UPDATE -- Caution - Ramp Hazard

UPDATE -- Caution - Ramp Hazard

UPDATE: It looks like Bill and George have wrangled the west dock back under control and we won't need the line running from the out end of the dock back to shore. Kudos, guys!

As a reminder to all, the ramps get very slippery with the slime build-up. Watch your step and when you get a catch, scrub some of the slime away!

Last Friday's storm broke one of the anchor lines free on the west dock. When the wind is from the east, the dock is in danger of drifting too close to JTown's dock.

Until we fix the anchor line (which may mean setting in a new concrete anchor), we will have to tie a line from the west dock to the post under the east dock. This means there will be a line across the ramp area - making it very difficult to use the ramps when there is an east wind.

We hope this situation will be resolved very soon.

Gazebo!

Gazebo!

You'll see our gazebo the next time you visit Westwood. There is limited seating, but those who stay late will now have some solace from the inevitable mosquito population. It's a covered area - like the porch - and flammable, so smoking is not permitted in the gazebo.

Speaking of those pesky critters, help keep them under control by dumping any standing water you see on the property (e.g., on chairs, and in boats, tires, buckets, garbage cans, etc.)

A Busy Week at Westwood

A Busy Week at Westwood

It's been a busy week at Westwood!

Monday and Wednesday nights saw the finale for our first batch of new sailors. Congratulations to everyone on the May CANSail2 class - now's the time to take a look back to realize how far you've come in such little time. The next step is to sail as much as you can this summer - Thursday Social Sail & Dinner is ideal, and the more adventurous will want to look at joining in on the racing action.

Tuesday night was another successful Toronto Sport & Social Club night. We had a very breezy night, leading to a real Urban Adventure for our guests, many of whom joined their hosts for an impromptu swim. Lots of smiles, and even dinner on the deck. At least one new member the very next day. These events require significant club participation - at the risk of missing someone, kudos to: Brock, Gary, Gigi, Jason, Julia, Julie, Jen, Lyle, Martin, Maxim, Norah, Patrina, Ron, Stavros, Tai & Terry!

Thursday Social Sail & Dinner -- a somewhat subdued turn-out, but those who came got in a good sail. Lots of food for everyone!

Friday Night Racing was cancelled. While Union Station was sinking, we were bailing out the crash boat and tying off the docks as they started to drift heavily toward J-Town. We lost one of the anchor connections on the west dock, which needs to be addressed before the next big storm.

The CANSAil3 class was out in full force on Saturday. A hearty group of sailors, who have also mastered the post-class dinner! Those who aren't racing yet are encouraged to join the fun now that their course is finished.

And the week finished with a new group of CANSail2 students starting on Sunday. The schedule was revised due to concerns about the weather. While winds were not as high as expected, they were still brisk. Another club had boats on the water - and it looked like many students in the water.

So that was our week at Westwood. Please check upcoming events to see what's in store this week. Among other things, our Monday/Wednesday CANSail2 class begins this week, and Old Salts will be joining the CANSail2 classes on Wednesday and Sunday.
