Westwood hosts the Toronto Sport & Social Club - Tuesday, May 29.

Westwood will be hosting 21 members of the Toronto Sport & Social Club for an Introduction to Sailing on Tuesday, May 29. The event has sold out - apparently, this has become one of TS&SC's most popular events (they are now starting to build their list for the June 26 session).

This event runs like a blend between an Old Salts' Night and a Thursday Social Sail & Dinner, and its success depends on member participation. We need at least 11 Skippers (Albacore and/or catamaran) to be our on-water hosts who will take two TS&SC members per boat. We also need at least one crash boat operator.

Specific activities may depend on the weather, so we'll decide that night. We could set up a small course like we do at the start of lessons, we could run a short cruise around the Outer Harbour, or we could just go 'free format' and let everyone go in their own direction. Whatever the case, someone will be cooking dinner for guests and volunteers. Last word was pork and chicken kebobs. Which mean we need cooks, too.

This is our chance to show a whole new group of people how much fun it can be to sail - and to share the secret of how accessible sailing can be in Toronto. Previous events have been as much fun for our volunteers as for our guests, so please let Gregg or Terry know that you'll be there to help.

Race: Volunteers Required

Race: Volunteers Required

Committee Boat

Westwood will be hosting it's first race of the season Friday May 25th. We're looking for some volunteers to help out on our committee and support boat. Duties may include; sound officer (firing the cannon), flag officer (raising flags), timers, recorders, mark setter and general boat hand. The only equipment you'll be required to bring is foul weather gear and a life jacket. All other equipment will be provided. Volunteers should be at the club before 6pm.

Race experience is helpfull though not required. If you have no experience but are interested training can/will be done on the job. Race committee can be a great introduction to racing (learning what the flags and noises mean) and an easy way to give back to the club.

On a related note the albatross has hinted that one of our more experienced committee members may be hanging up his shotgun at the end of this season. This means will need to train as many people as we can this year for racing next year.

Please contact me at race [at] westwoodsailing [dot] ca if you'd like to sign up or have any questions.

Lions and Tigers and the Club Crawl - Saturday May 26th

The annual Club Crawl with Mooredale and J-town is on Saturday May 26th. The party starts at Mooredale around 6, moves over to J-town, then ends up at Westwood for dancing. The party costs $15 which gets you appetizers and refreshments at each club. BYOB. The theme is 'Wild In the Jungle' - costumes are encouraged.

There are no advanced tickets so just show up at the start of the night and you'll get a stamp which gets you into the other clubs.

Thursday Social Sail & Dinner - May 10

We're starting up our Thursday Social Sail & Dinner this week. The sign-up board filled up almost as soon as it was posted. The first cooks on the schedule are Terry, Jen & Karen. We'll be serving up pulled pork (with a veggie option). The meal will be set at $8 and please bring exact change.

We'll be starting a schedule for the Thursday Dinners which means we are looking for cooks. There's already rumours of a paella night. If you are interested in taking on the May 17th dinner or any other dinner. Email Jen at communications [at] westwoodsailing [dot] ca.

Sign Up Now for Saturday's Boat Repair Clinic (May 5)

The Canadian Albacore Association is providing a Boat Repair Clinic on Saturday, May 5. You should take this course if you are a Boat Captain or are interested in improving your repair skills. This is an excellent skill for everyone, and fixing our boats is a great way to contribute to the Club's success.

The clinic will be held at Westwood from 11AM sharp (be ready by 1030) and will run until 3PM. It will be taught by Kim Anderson, who repaired many Westwood boats last year.

Among other things, the clinic will cover auto-bailer repair, hull-deck joint repair for OY boats, and an introduction to Ovington repairs.

The target market for this clinic is the experienced fiberglasser, ideally someone who attended last year’s clinic.
Westwood has four spots reserved. Unexpectedly, only one spot is spoken for (I will take another, but not at the expense of anyone with talent).

If you would like to attend this workshop, please submit your name immediately at: commodore [at] westwoodsailing [dot] ca
